The eagle flew
Across borders where the air is dust
The story of a child
Who met that eagle
And reached out his arms
To the one who had taken his away
And a soldier told
Of how the sky grew dark
And the earth wept tears
Screaming rust
But what is freedom?
And what does it mean?
You can’t believe in a flag
If it is blood that wins
The eagle never sleeps
It sacrifices its heroes
It displays its stars and its trophies
The child is orphaned of home and of poetry
Because of the indifference
That war carries within itself
And a soldier told
Of how time stood still
The earth wept tears
Of vinegar and hail
But what is truth?
And what does it mean?
You can’t believe in a flag

Is it a sun that never rises?
Is it darkness falling over us?

Of how the one that wins is a flag
That carries blood within it
Within itself… tell me, what is freedom?
